Come join the discussion at the NJ Geospatial Forum Boundary Task Force!

The Boundary Task Force of the NJ Geospatial Forum was created earlier this year to encourage open discussion and cross-education between GIS users and surveyors.

Mission Statement

The mission of the NJGF Boundary Task Force is to educate and develop standards on the matter of legal boundaries for the purpose of protecting the public, GIS and surveying communities while increasing the value and reliability of the data in the State’s enterprise GIS.

Goals

  • Educate the GIS & Engineering communities and the public as to what a boundary is, how a boundary is created and their legal ramifications.
  • Educate the GIS, Surveying & Engineering communities to the terminology of GIS parcels and Surveying boundary and when they should be used.
  • Develop consistent standards for submission of surveys and survey data into the state’s enterprise GIS.

About Dan Martin, National Geodetic Survey, Northeast Regional Geodetic Advisor
Dan Martin works for the National Geodetic Survey and has been the Northeast Regional Geodetic Advisor since May of 2015. As the Regional Advisor, he instructs local surveyors, state and municipal agencies, and the geospatial community at large, on how to use and preserve the National Spatial Reference System, and provides liaison between the National Geodetic Survey and the States of ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, and NJ, as well as other federal agencies.
He worked in the Route Survey and Geodetic Survey sections of the Vermont Agency of Transportation from 1988 through 2003, and held the position of Geodetic Program Supervisor for the Agency from 1999 through 2003. In 2003 Dan began his career with the National Geodetic Survey as the Vermont State Geodetic Advisor.
Dan is a Past President of the American Association for Geodetic Surveying (AAGS), and is a Fellow Member of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. He is also a member of the Vermont Society of Land Surveyors and the New Hampshire Land Surveyors Association.

State Board Report:
• No report, they did not have a meeting.
Executive Comm.:
• A focus group has been set up to study the answers/comments about land surveying in the future. The biggest response was to how to get younger people involved with land surveying and go back to the High Schools.
• John Rossi resigned as Vice President, so Ambrose Gmeiner moved up to fill V.P. seat and we approved John Beattie a North Jersey Director to take the Director at Large position.
NSPS Governor:
• Jim Sens will email a detailed report about the NSPS spring conference.
NJSPLS Conference:
• The conference will be more electronic and we are going to improve the Tech day on Friday.
Public Relations:
• Annual Awards Dinner is Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Clarion Hotel in Toms River. Chip Adamson, Steve Mervine and Bill Haggerty are attending for West Jersey. (110 people are attending)
• NJSPLS is designing a new, improved and updated booth for various conferences.
GIS/LIS Comm.:
• NJSPLS has a boundary task force committee at NJGF. Headed by the GIS/LIS Comm. they have quarterly meetings in Trenton and has made the announcement.
• The GIS/LIS Comm. is looking for speakers for MACUROSA conference in October.
• Chip Adamson will be co-chair on the NJSPLS GIS/LIS comm. with Dawn McCall.
• The GIS/LIS Comm. submitted a 2016/2017 budget for &5,000 for various events, meetings and activities during this year and it will be included in the NJSPLS budget and voted on at July’s meeting.
Education Comm.:
• Setting up CST classes in September and the CST test will be in October this year.
Legislative:
• All legislative bills that NJSPLS is tracking are on our web site. All bills that are new or reintroduced committee is reviewing.
• NJSPLS is sending a letter to support the Digital Coast Act to Senators Booker (NJ), Baldwin (WI) & Murkowski (AK)
NJSPLS Scholarship Foundation:
• Charlie Bell is running the raffle again this year, Bill has the tickets if you need them. Charlie has said that it looks like we will raise less then we did last year unless we get more tickets sold.
• Looking to do a study on investing the scholarship foundation so we can earn more interest.
