President Bill Haggerty called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Mr. Haggerty asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.
The floor was turned over to tonight’s speaker.
The speaker tonight is Mike Ruth P.L.S. Mr. Ruth has been surveying for over thirty years. His experience ranges from working as a head of a design team providing base mapping, surfaces and alignments for DOT projects. To the constructing of heavy highway projects including bridges.
The discussion tonight focused on using CAD software to aid in construction surveying from field to finish. One project was highlighted in which confusion over coordinate systems led to an error in a field stakeout of a house foundation within a subdivision. In this example, the error was not discovered until a foundation as-built was ordered and another survey crew discovered it was built in the wrong area.
Mr. Ruth emphasized the need for constant communication in construction projects, not only between surveyors and contractors, but other surveyors who come into projects at later dates. There is an absolute need to be able to work with coordinate systems that are in agreement with other work.
Mr. Ruth took questions from the membership throughout the lecture.
A motion was made to accept the minutes from the March meeting. The minutes were not presented on the SAWJ website at the time of this meeting. The motion was seconded. The motion past by unanimous voice vote.S
