SURVEYORS’ ASSOCIATION OF WEST JERSEY
October 11, 2018
MINUTES OF MEETING
876 Centerton Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054
President Bill Haggerty called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Mr. Haggerty asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.
The floor was turned over to tonight’s speaker.
The speakers tonight Kevin Zelinsky and Chip Adamson from Remington and Vernick Engineers. The topic discussed tonight is the interoperability between GIS and CAD and how to benefit the surveyors.
The speakers discussed the elements and concepts of GIS and demonstrated how GIS software and CAD software can be used together to form a useful planning and analysis tool. They demonstrated how GIS is used for the planning of survey and engineering projects.
A topic of concern for some members was the use of metadata in
GIS projects and how to interpret metadata in projects. The speakers discussed the need for clear and concise metadata so that anyone using the GIS components have a knowledge of how that data was obtained, and what type of project the data was intended. Most have to be aware that all data will not fit all types of standards.
Kevin and Chip shared live demonstrations of the GIS databases they have built for different clients and how surveyed field data is integrated into these databases, as well as publicly obtained data. Their presentation pieces will be made available to the SAWJ membership via the website and email.
Questions were asked throughout the presentation.
The presentation concluded at 8:50 pm.
The September meeting minutes were approved by voice vote.
