SURVEYORS’ ASSOCIATION OF WEST JERSEY
September 14, 2018
MINUTES OF MEETING
Carlucci’s Waterfront 876 Centerton Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054
Treasurer Rick Sapio called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. Mr. Sapio asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.
The floor was turned over to tonight’s speaker.
The speakers tonight were Althanasios Georgiadis (Thanasi) and Perry Stavridis civil engineers with WSP USA Inc. (formerly Parsons Brinckerhoff). The topic tonight was the survey and design of ADA compliant handicap ramps.
The gentlemen began with introducing the membership to the design requirements for ramps under the American with Disabilities Act. There are many requirements for design on ramps that are used for pedestrian walkways at street intersections. Most ramps today are not ADA compliant, which is why many state and local governments are replacing these intersection ramp.
Discussions were held regarding different aspects of the ramps, including the Detectable Warning System, which is placed at the intersections per the ADA requirements to act as a “stop sign” for the impaired.
Mr. Georgiadis and Mr. Stavridis focused their discussion of design to how it relates to the surveying profession. There were many questions asked by the membership of what engineers expect from the surveyors who provide the data on existing conditions in order to have a compliant design. Most of the membership agreed that data points must be above and beyond what may by minimally requested in order to create a design that not only is ADA compliant but does not negatively impact storm water runoff. Members of SAWJ asked that when engineers prepare a scope of services bid request for these jobs that they allow for the surveyor to provide all necessary work.
Questions were asked throughout the presentation.
The presentation concluded at 9:50 pm.
There were no minutes for the August meeting.
