MINUTES OF MEETING

President Bill Haggerty called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.  Mr. Haggerty asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.

The floor was turned over to tonight’s speaker.

SPEAKER

 The speakers tonight were Steffanie A. Lerch and Paul J. Tully, certified financial planners with Eagle Wealth Strategies.  Mr. Tully began the presentation by discussing recent market fluctuations, economy, and retirement options.  He turned to the floor over to Ms. Lerch to discuss further about retirement planning.

Ms. Lerch explained about retirement risks, which includes longevity, spending, inflation and a number other unknown variables such as market risks.  She encouraged the membership to start thinking about when they would like to retire, how much money would they need and try to estimate how long it should last.  Also for consideration was what the individual goals were for retirement and how to budge for those goals.

Among the topics discussed were how to decide what you would need to retire as it relates to your age, tax bracket, marital status and your current employment status.

Mr. Tully and Ms. Lerch handed out copies of “The Eagle’s View”.  A quarterly newsletter published by Eagle Wealth Strategies that highlights current events in relation to financial planning and offers some commentary.

Discussion was held and questions were asked throughout the presentation.  The presentation concluded at 8:15 pm.

TREASURER REPORT

Treasurer’s report was postponed until the next business meeting due to the absence of the Treasurer.

OLD BUSINESS

NJSPLS SURVCON was held in Atlantic City.  New officers were sworn in.  More information can be obtained by visiting www.njspls.org

NEW BUSINESS

–Lou Marchuk will be giving a presentation to the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors.  The topic will be Ground vs Grid coordinate systems.

–SAWJ has a very positive outlook for speakers to attend monthly meetings in 2018.

SPEAKER

 The speaker tonight was Lou Marchuk with Arora and Associates.  The topic tonight was vertical control.

Mr. Marchuk shared material with the membership about documentation of vertical control points, the history of vertical control points, and how to analyze data sheets in order to adapt to your project needs.

–SAWJ 2018 officers were announced.  Bill Haggerty will remain as President.  Rick Sapio will remain as Treasurer.  Craig Stratton will remain as Recording Secretary.  All other executive board offices are open for anyone who wishes to serve.

–Discussions were held regarding the time frame for which meeting announcements are sent out via email.  It was suggested that the membership be sent a notice sooner regarding upcoming meetings and the speakers scheduled for each meeting.  This would allow some members to make arrangements to attend.

Treasurer Richard Sapio called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm.  Mr. Sapio asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.

The floor was turned over to tonight’s speaker.

SPEAKER

 The speaker tonight was Adam Grant, P.L.S. with Odin Areodata and Consulting Engineering Services.  The presentation was focused on UAV functions and capabilities resulting in survey grade mapping.

Mr. Grant discussed with the membership his role in this emerging discipline within the field of surveying and engineering.  He discussed the FAA regulations that govern how to operate drones for survey work and how to navigate within those regulations.

The discussion was centered around the technology that is utilized, including the aircraft, which Mr. Grant had on hand to show the membership.  Also discussed was Pix4D, the photogrammetry software program used to post process and evaluate data obtained using drone flights.  Mr. Grant made sure it was understood that the use of quality, adjusted ground control is essential to obtaining the highest quality of data possible and that Odin Aerodata would not accept anything less for their clients.

Mr. Grant presented some prior projects as an example of the high level of accuracy which can be obtained using the technology and techniques outlined in his presentation.

Vice-President Bill Haggerty called the meeting to order at 6:59 pm.  Mr. Haggerty asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.  At 7:10 pm the floor was handed over to tonight’s speaker

SPEAKER

The speaker tonight was Tara Vargo, Esq.  The topic for the evening was ALTA Land Title Surveys.

Mrs. Vargo discussed the minimum ALTA/NSPS Land Title  Survey Standards and the optional Table A requirements.  Many issues were raised by the membership regarding the surveys including how the certifications should be written and why ALTA/NSPS expressly directs their certification to remain unchanged.  Other items such as the responsibility of title companies to acquire the deeds for the property in questions and the adjoining properties was discussed.

Mrs. Vargo presented a number of different options for supplying the client with a product that meets their needs.  This includes a list of possible boundary line encroachments.  Mrs. Vargo also warned that surveyors make no legal case as to the location of boundary lines.

Questions were asked throughout the evening.  The presentation concluded at 9:00 pm.

SAWJ was given 2 credits for continuing education for the GIS/CAD presentation from May of 2017.

NEW BUSINESS

Lou Marchuck made a suggestion that the membership share with the group some difficult survey projects they have encountered as a way to encourage shared communication among the group.  He also asked that SAWJ make an effort to provide programs that are geared towards Survey Technicians.

SAWJ Meeting Minutes August 10, 2017

 

MINUTES OF MEETING

 

Vice-President Bill Haggerty called the meeting to order at 7:08 pm.  Mr. Haggerty asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.  At 7:10 pm the floor was handed over to tonight’s speaker

SPEAKER

The speaker tonight was Brent A. Jones, PE, PLS, is the Global Manager, Cadastre/Land Records at Esri.

Mr. Jones’ discussion covered a wide range of topics.  He discussed the advancements in GIS that ESRI was promoting, including the ability for individuals to create their own applications using simple software.  The role of the Professional Land Surveyor in the development and promotion of GIS software was discussed.  The membership was invited to ask questions throughout the presentation.

Mr. Jones’ has shared with SAWJ multiple tools to help people use the ESRI software.  These tools have been emailed to the membership in attendance.

The presentation concluded at 9:31 pm.

GIS-LIS COMMITTEE

Dawn McCall, the co-chair person for the NJSPLS GIS-LIS Committee was in attendance to discuss the committee with 7 other professionals from that committee.  GIS-LIS holds there meetings in the evenings and is open to all professionals.  They are working on a class to be held at the next NJSPLS SurvCon.  There is also plans to hold a Geospatial Family Fun Day in Union County.  For more information check with Dawn McCall and see the MAC-URISA website for meeting dates.

NJSPLS Awards dinner was held on June 3, 2017.  SAWJ had sponsored a table.

NEW BUSINESS

–Harold Bozarth passed out to the membership an inquiry he received via email from a person seeking employment in the surveying field.  All members were asked to give consideration if they had a position to fill.

–Lou Marchuk informed the membership of a new technology that would allow drone aircraft to submerge themselves under the surface of water and return to the air.  He mentioned that he would bring more information as it becomes available.

SPEAKER

Mr. Lou Marchuk’s presentation subject is “Grid to Ground, Scale Factors, and easy formulas for the field”.

Lou discussed the various ways that scale factors can be obtained to convert coordinates from grid systems to ground systems.  Discussions were held regarding the dangers of assuming systems, failure to note systems and their associated scale factors.

Lou presented multiple methods for determining scale factors, including those published in academic texts, as well as the use of the National Geodetic Survey data sheets.

Discussion was held and questions were asked throughout the presentation.  Lou promised to email the membership his entire presentation for their review and use.  Any member who does not get a copy may request one from SAWJ, or Mr. Marchuk.

Vice-President Bill Haggerty called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm.  Mr. Haggerty asked the membership present to go around the room and make introductions.

SPEAKER

The speaker tonight is Frank Lenik, P.L.S. of Leica Geosystems, Inc. Mr. Lenik’s topic was the New Jersey Statutes on the calibration of EDM’s and how to use the New Jersey calibration baselines.  His topic also included the surveyor’s responsibility to calibrate the EDM and how to use the forms provided through NJSPLS to record the data necessary for calibration.  Discussion was held regarding the legal reasons for calibration instruments and how the surveyor’s failure to do so could result in the work conducted be invalidated.

After the conclusion of Mr. Lenik’s presentation, Fred Czepiga, formerly of N.J. Geodetic Survey, gave a presentation on the history of the New Jersey Calibration Baselines, how they were established, and how geodetic surveyors would approach setting new calibration baselines.

NEW BUSINESS

–The July Meeting of SAWJ will include a presentation regarding the difference between Grid coordinates and Ground coordinates.

–The August Meeting of SAWJ will include a presentation about GIS and ESRI.

–SAWJ has obtained approval from the State Board for continuing education credits for the following seminars:

“Tidelands and the Surveyor” by Lou Marchuk.  January, 2017 – 2 credits approved.

“Surveying next to PSE&G Property and PSE&G record access procedures and safety” by Michael Poploski.  April, 2017 – 2 credits approved.

–Lou Marchuk suggests re-evaluating the amount of money awarded by SAWJ for scholarship due to the rising cost of education at NJIT and other institutions.
